Peace project – Socio-economic project with Creole hens for the population of the ETCR Agua Bonita and the surrounding villages in La Montañita in Caquetá province of Colombia

Project information:

This socio-economic project for the people of the Territorial Region of Education and Reintegration (ETCR) Agua Bonita and the surrounding villages in the municipality of La Montañita in the province of Caquetá is expected to generate capacity and opportunities in the rural population, initially focusing on low-income families, in which with the beginning of the rearing of small animal species, here by the raising of creole hens, the small peasant farms and thus also the economic independence should be promoted. Therefore, the use of domestic hens for chick and egg production has a strategy to tackle socio-economic problems in rural areas, as these domestic birds (hens) contribute to a level of food security and income for the families who carry it out. It can also be used to buy products that are not produced on the farm and as a savings cushion. It is important to note that in recent years the market for products produced under the grazing system (eggs and meat) is growing, as most of it is natural. However, it is acknowledged that good management practices are required (from the farm or small farm to the consumer) to provide healthy and harmless products.

Creole hens have greater resilience than other larger species. They can find their own food in the yard or garden, and in addition to accompanying corn as a primary component of their diet, it becomes a high energy source because its starch and fat content is low.

To this end and in response to the need to improve the quality of life of rural families, here in the villages of El Cedro, Cedrito, Agua Bonita, Juntas and Morros, and thus diminish the low economic sustainability of this population, a small program has established from one hectare of maize (Zea mays) as a food source for the breeding of thirty (30) Creole hens to raise eggs and Creole chicks to benefit twenty – five (25) farming families, as well as technical assistance from agricultural technicians experienced at the creation and preservation of agricultural projects in the region.
