Health Project in Salitre, Guayas, Ecuador
TITLE:
Assistance with ANTIPARASITICS and VITAMIN C to children from vulnerable sectors in the Salitre Canton, Guayas, Ecuador.
RATIONALE:
In the Salitre Canton, as in other rural cantons, parasitic diseases and upper respiratory tract infections are, in general, the most frequent among children in preschool and school age. The lack of potable water, the absence of sewage systems for wastewater, the consumption of fruits directly from the tree (or ground) without washing or peeling them, the habit of not wearing shoes, and overcrowding are some of the causes of these epidemics.
OBJECTIVES:
By providing free DEPARASITATION campaigns with the presence of a healthcare professional (doctor) and administering VITAMIN C, we aim to alleviate these epidemics in children and somewhat mitigate the limited economy of rural households by avoiding the cost of medical consultations and the cost of these pharmaceutical supplies.
GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION:
The area occupied by the Salitre canton spans 388 km². It is located in the central-eastern part of the Guayas province, 42 km from Guayaquil.
ACTIVITIES:
Following prior coordination with residents of the various sectors or with teachers from rural schools, a brigade visit is organized. After an informative and educational talk on health and hygiene for the children, their parents, and teachers, the doctor directly administers a single-dose chewable antiparasitic. Once the deworming stage is complete, chewable Vitamin C tablets are distributed to each child, and the visit ends with the gift of an antivirus card that can be worn around the neck and also serves as a toy.
