The El Vaticano farm is located in the protected area (desert and dry forest) of Tatacoa (Huila) and is strategically important for balancing agricultural productivity and environmental protection. Due to the ecological sensitivity of the dry forest, soil and land-use restrictions are high; nevertheless, there are sustainable agricultural and animal husbandry alternatives that can be implemented under strict environmental regulation. Suitable activities: gentle, semi-mechanized farming, agroforestry, silvopastoral livestock farming, resource-efficient aquaculture, and responsible ecotourism. Technical criteria, participatory planning, and compliance with applicable environmental standards are crucial. Future potential: the farm could serve as a model for sustainable rural development, linking productivity with ecological restoration, biodiversity protection, and economic opportunities for local communities.
The foundation „Für den Süden – Stiftung der Familie Raschke“ supports the El Vaticano farm in learning processes around food production and in implementing an initiative that enables communal and small-scale agricultural development, including water management and supply. 3,000 euros are allocated to the Colombian project in Huila.
